Not just an email sender - a publishing platform, website builder, monetization engine, and growth tool wrapped into a single product. For newsletter-first creators, that pitch is compelling. For everyone else, it might be more than you need.
I’ve signed up for the free plan, tested the editor, explored the analytics, and read through hundreds of user reviews on G2 and Reddit. Here’s my honest take.
What Beehiiv Does Well
The Newsletter Editor
Beehiiv’s editor is clean, fast, and clearly built for writing. It’s a block-based system that feels more like a modern publishing tool than a traditional email builder. You can add text, images, buttons, dividers, and HTML blocks without wrestling a clunky drag-and-drop interface.
The AI writing assistant is available on all plans (10 uses/day on free, 25 on Scale, 50 on Max). It’s useful for generating first drafts and subject lines, though I wouldn’t publish its output without heavy editing. The real value is the distraction-free writing experience. If you’ve used Substack’s editor and liked the simplicity, Beehiiv feels similar but with more customization options.
Built-in Monetization (Scale Plan and Above)
This is where Beehiiv separates itself from the field. Three monetization channels, all native to the platform:
Ad Network: Beehiiv connects you with advertisers who want to reach your audience. You set your rates, choose which ads to accept, and the platform handles the delivery. Premium Subscriptions: Charge readers for access to premium content. Unlike Substack, which takes 10% of your subscription revenue, Beehiiv’s Scale plan takes 0%. That difference adds up fast if you’re generating meaningful subscription income.
The Growth Engine
Beehiiv’s Recommendation Network works both ways. When new subscribers sign up for your newsletter, Beehiiv can recommend other newsletters to them - and those creators’ newsletters can recommend yours back. What Beehiiv Doesn’t Do Well
The Price Jump Is Steep
The free Launch plan is generous: 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, a custom website, and the recommendation network. But the moment you want monetization, automations, surveys, A/B testing, or human support, you need the Scale plan at $49/month.

Automations Are Limited

If you’re a business sending promotional campaigns, product launches, or transactional emails alongside your newsletter, you’ll need a different tool - or a second tool alongside Beehiiv.
Team Features Cost Extra
The free plan is limited to 1 team member. Scale gives you 3 seats, Max gives you unlimited. For solo creators this doesn’t matter, but small teams running a publication will need to factor the seat limits into their decision.

- You need advanced marketing automations. Beehiiv’s automations are basic. If multi-step funnels and behavioral triggers are critical, Kit or ActiveCampaign will serve you better.
- You want traditional email marketing features. Pre-designed templates, promotional campaigns, and ecommerce integrations aren’t Beehiiv’s thing.

Beehiiv earns an 8.5 rating because it does something no other platform does as well: it combines newsletter publishing, monetization, and growth into a single, focused product. The ad network, Boosts, and 0% take on paid subscriptions create real revenue opportunities that don’t exist on Kit, MailerLite, or Mailchimp.
The price jump from free to $49/month is the biggest weakness. The automations are basic. And if you need anything beyond newsletters - ecommerce emails, complex funnels, CRM features - you’ll outgrow Beehiiv quickly because it was never designed for those use cases.
For newsletter creators who want to build a media business around their writing, Beehiiv is the best platform available. For everyone else, there are better fits.
